Sample Transcript: You’ve heard me say a few times now that video poker is the best slot machine bet in the casino. That’s true because video poker games universally have higher payback than regular reel or video slots. There are a couple of reasons for this, but perhaps the biggest reason is that video poker games are considered ‘skill based’ games. Put simply, they’re the only type of slot machine that allow you a certain level of control over the outcome other than when you hit the bet button. When you play video poker, you’re initially given five cards and can choose to hold or discard those cards on the next draw, changing your outcome. If you’re good at poker, you can greatly increase your odds of winning over the long term by holding the right cards at the right times, but if you’re a poor player you can actually decrease your payback by holding the wrong cards. Because there are far more poor poker players than good ones, the casinos can bump up the paybacks overall to compensate.

Another reason poker games are a better bet than other games is because poker games use a deck of cards to determine combinations, not virtual reels. If you remember Episodes Two and Three, you know that the casino uses the RNG, Virtual Reels, and the Paytable to determine payback, but on poker games there are no virtual reels. There are always 52 cards in a virtual deck, and the casino can’t change that. That means that your chance of pulling any single card initially is always one in 52, no matter what machine you play. Since the casino can no longer control the odds on the game, the only way they can affect the payback is by changing the paytable, or how much you’re paid for each hand. Don’t forget to head to Tech4Truth.com and check out my free video poker simulator while you wait for my next episode! In episode six I’ll be talking about money management and a great starting strategy you can use to ensure that you always walk out of the casino with some money. I’ll see you there, and thanks again for watching Tech4Truth.

  1. Play in march I've lived in Las Vegas for 15 years and my thinking is that video poker machines are suppose to pay the players back 90 percent a year so before the April tax deadline it has to show this.i won last year over 15000 7 royals in one month march and it would deal 4 aces with kickers alot but rest of year was lucky to see a royal.whats the odds of me my mom and my sister hitting 2 progressive royals each at same bar within 3 weeks of each other dealt 3 of em hit the rest of royals on holding 4.

  2. Thanks for the video. Lost pretty bad last trip to Vegas (still had fun though). I plan on being a bit more calculated when I return next week. Btw staying at The Wynn (Encore). Don't really plan on leaving the resort, so if anyone knows of any good games to play, I'm all ears.

  3. Won $500 twice within 2 weeks on same machine. Walked out of casino after that within one hour $500 richer. Not gonna leave that machine haha. Nice day's work. Professional Gambler here 😛

  4. The only thing that trips my trigger with video poker is being dealt the same card you discarded and it happens often. in reality you know the odds of that happening is less. Your going for a flush in spades and you discard a K of hearts. Then your dealt a K of hearts…really now?

  5. Exact. the pay table change the game's payout %. As you said, there is the "Flush & Full House" pays changes, that makes fluctuate the game's %, but also on some different video poker games: the "four of a kind" (variation example 25:1 to 20:1) and the "two pairs" (variation example 2:1 to 1:1) as example for a "Ten's or Better" game. All these changes on the pay table change the game's payout percentage as well (I've done a documentary about video pokers %).
The example of gamewith a pay table from one pair to royal flush like: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 25 ,50, 250 has a % payout of +/- 98%, then adding a progressive jackpot, or a bonus such as a four of a kind bonus on such game will increase the total payout to +99%.
    😉

  6. My favorite video poker strategy is to decide in advance which hand you want try to win. Basically, I consider which cards to hold based on the likelihood of the possible hand dealt and strength of that play.
