5 Things You Will NEVER See Good Poker Players Do

  1. Do you do any of these 5 things at the poker table? Also, here are the 5 easy ways to catch them in a bluff: https://youtu.be/D8PCnYDbMzM

  2. Here is 1 problem. I've been playing pretty nitty here lately. It seems like every table I have been on over the last month has been nothing but LAGS. So I mostly check/call unless I have a really strong hand. And these people are still calling me all the way down when im betting/raising even though I'm playing with the lowest vpip on the table by a very wide margin.

  3. I understand what Nathan says here in regard to managing the pot and protecting your stack in a live game, but often with big pairs, I find that difficult, especially when I'm in position.

Here's an example. Not long ago I was playing 5/5 No limit hold e'm at the Commerce Casino in L..A. with a max buy-in of $500. I had $450 left in front of me, picked up pocket Kings in early position, pre-flop raised to $25, got 3 callers, so we went 4-way to the flop with $100 in the pot. The flop came Qxx, with no straight or flush draws; so a pretty dry board. I bet $75, which narrowed it down to just one caller, the big blind. Now with $250 in the pot and only $350 left in my stack, I went all-in on the turn when a Jack hit and my opponent checked. I didn't see any reason to check here to "manage the size of the pot", or to bet smaller since on the river there's no card I could fold to considering the small amount I'd have left, along with the size of the pot. He called with 2-pair, QJ, I got no help on the river, and just like that I lost $450 on the hand and was out my initial buy-in.

Any thoughts on what, if anything I could have done better, or differently? Yes, I could have checked or bet small on the turn. But if so, he would then have bet fairly large most likely on the river. And with no straight, flush, or Ace on board, I don't see how I could fold there. So in the end, I think I still would have gone broke (or at least, close to it) on the hand if I had tried to "manage the pot" on the turn. That being said, this is a situation I run into fairly often, and I rarely don't lose my stack. It's very frustrating, to say the least. So I'm definitely open to constructive criticism. I've even tried buying in for less simply to minimize my losses in these situations, although that's not what pros recommend. So I go back and forth on that. I lose less, sure, but I also win less in the times my hand holds up.

  4. Altho your right, I mostly agree with your points, I only partially agree with your point #4, about semi auto semi overfolding AA, KK, whether in your example, other situations versus NITS, OMC's, because of your point #3 about OVERVALUING hands.

During the last 17 years I have played, there has been a semi lot of times that I have folded AA, KK, small 2 pair, etc, to a NIT, OMC, only for them to turn over a hand that while NOT A BLUFF, I HAD BEAT.

The reason for this, is that Nathan, your right that they are not bluffing, but even tho they are not bluffing, they are, do, often OVERVALUE their hand.

Take your KK example, the NIT, OMC, could be playing QQ, AJ suited.

I know that AJ isn't a good, great hand, and that some of you would say that, but AJ suited, is still a top 17% to 20% to 23% of hands, hand, and a NIT, OMC, could think that AJ is awesome, and could be waiting for AJ suited or better, and could have hit top pair of J's, A kicker, and think that's AWESOME, and be OVERVALUING that, and NOT BLUFFING, and just betting his top pair, top kicker, and KK could be folding to that.

And it's not something that's a theoretical possibility.

In that kind of, type of KK hand, example, etc, about 23%, 33%, 43% of the time the NIT, OMC, IS beating my KK, with AA, 2 pair, set, trips, etc.

But about 59% to 69% to 79% the NIT, OMC, is not bluffing, but still is OVERVALUING, and still is losing to my KK.

So because of that, just semi auto semi overfolding KK, etc, is NOT semi automatically the right thing to do.

    What is the right way?

The right way is what Nathan outlined in his point 3 about OVERVALUING.

KK, vs the NIT, OMC, should be trying to limit, control the size of pot, via calling or pot control. Don't reraise, don't bet. Just check call. And only call big double pot bets, all ins, etc, IF, IF, IF, you are getting AWESOME POT ODDS PRICE to call, like 4,5,6,7 to 1 awesome, and only IF board is not 4 to a straight, JT98, or 4 card flush, 4 suited's on board, etc. If the board is something like Q 9 7 4 2, no straights, no flushes, and you have KK, NIT, OMC, likely has AQ suited that hit Top pair top kicker, and think they have you, KK beat, and don't know you have KK.

Can't be scared of 2 pair, sets, trips, monsters under the bed, even against the NITS, OMC's.

Yeah sure you will get your QQ, KK, AA, etc, beat about 20% to 30% to 40% of the time.

But the times you win, will make up for that.

Also that's why you should have good bankroll management.

Also another reason why you check call with KK vs NIT's, OMC's, is that sometimes your read on, about player type, can be wrong.

What if they are not a NIT, OMC, and they are just unluckily going through extreme ultimate card dead ness, and because of that, you think they are a NIT, OMC, and fold your KK, to their AQ that hit Top pair, top kicker.

I know that there have been times I was extremely card dead, and players wrongly thought I was a NIT, and I was able to exploit that and bluff.

Sometimes going to have to fold AA, KK to NIT's, etc.

But most of time, rather then saying call or fold AA, KK, QQ, JJ, vs NITS, JUST PLAY VERY CAREFULLY vs NITS.

So no, AA, etc, is not a AUTO FOLD VS NITS.

  5. So if you are always playing bad player and want to move up I would think playing in a few tough games would be beneficial

  6. Hi Nathan, I purchased the book and video. I sent you an email but got no response. Can you take a look please?
