Dude with pockets 88s deserved it. Played it horribly. Don’t know what his plan was but ok

Sell out toss pot
"What?!?!?" was my reaction as well when I saw how this person played middle set. 😂😂😂
No spade and he raised you.
Check flop was fine imo. C-betting folds out almost all combos that don't contain an A and certainly weakens villains range meaning button is more likely to lead with an A on turn, rep an A if he doesn't have one, and play draws aggressively.
The idea that villain should c-bet then bet two more streets works with only a tiny part of Jonathans range- 2 pair or better, AQ AK (AK might be a raise pre?). It doesn't work against medium pairs, it doesn't work against weak Aces.
If Jonathan did have a good hand, like 2 pair or AQ, he would bet turn 50% and that would make $100 pot, he would bet river 50% or more and that would make pot $200 or more. at that point a raise all in on the river would give 3:1 , with Jonathan only having to be ahead 25% so I think he would call. Many board run outs pair, which would usually result in a call for AK AQ which now has 2 pair with great kicker. Very few run outs make villain lose.
Many comments criticize villain for checking which I assume is to weaken his range. However, Jonathan also checks to weaken his range. I think in both cases checking is fine. Way ahead or way behind Jonathan check. And way ahead villain check.
What do you think Jonathan? Is checking set bad vs button range?
