Like any poker game, the better you get and the more poker skills you acquire the better you will do.
In the meantime, if you’re just starting to play low stakes no limit hold ‘em at a casino or you are joining your friends for a low limit NLH home game these poker tips can get you started.
Play Tight Preflop
When it’s ‘only’ $3 to limp into the pot or ‘only’ $15 to call your raise, some poker players at the low stakes are going to play a lot wider than you’d expect.
Playing better starting poker hands is the best (and easiest) way to take advantage of low stakes live players who play too many poker hands.
Don’t Bluff Multiway Pots
When 5 people see the flop it’s just so much easier for someone to flop the NUTS and have you drawing dead.
Most of the time, someone is going to have something they like and they aren’t going to adjust as much as they should when playing multiway, this means you’re going to have people calling a lot lighter than they should so bluffing often becomes a losing poker strategy.
Play Aggressively
As a counterpoint, be aggressive. Most players (and especially low stakes poker players) play poorly against aggression.
Most poker players either don’t call enough, don’t raise enough, they fold too much, and generally play poker timidly.
You can’t play poker scared if you want to win, scared money dies a quiet death on the poker table.
3-Bet and isolate weaker poker players, punish them for being afraid to put the money in!
If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at pot limit omaha, no limit hold ‘em, or poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.
