Betting the turn could get an strong ace to call. Betting the river could rep a missed draw.

Played well until the river. He should have absolutely bet

Carolan should have made a mid-level value bet on the river. This would do two things, make the other player think he's trying to steal the pot on a bluff and have him handle his chips to call, perhaps promoting him to raise.
I can never say knowing both their whole cards before the hand was played.
From my position of hindsight the way he checked his cards and rubbed his beard on the turn was a little suspect.
Shoulda bet river. But still got a lot off him checking.
