Playing poker professionally changes the way you think in a ton of different ways.
Some people are naturally skilled in these factors but generally you learn similar lessons or important concepts from poker if you put in the hours.
One of the first keys is that poker players learn not to be results oriented.
The more you get your poker chips all-in the more you learn to detach from the results of a play and focus on the poker strategy involved.
Did you get your chips all in good? Was it just a bad beat or is there poker strat to learn in this hand? Would Phil Galfond have some poker tips for you if he watched you play that poker hand?
Poker players understand that, in all of life, variance is going to have an effect. Your decisions do not have control over the results and the results do not inform you of whether a decision was ‘good’ or ‘bad.’
If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at Pot limit Omaha, no limit hold ‘em, or poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.
Are you a new poker player or a poker beginner? Do you just need the best poker strategy and best poker tips or do you have a high-stakes poker related question you’d like a poker professional’s advice on? "If I go 100mph down the back roads to get to my destination, with my chances of getting stopped by a cop, crashing, and my car breaking down.. I should still average 2.89% quicker than going the way google said.
-Excellent results for a poker player. =p
I have trouble fighting the short term variance online. As an American I have no real regulated sites to play poker. I see the same thing over and over. I find it incredibly hard to fight the feeling of these sites cheating u. It's just the same situation over and over. Coincidences are not something I believe much in
Luck is greatly under estimated in the world. With bad luck you get cancer and die, or never even born in the first place. Many big life decisions are non recurring so there's no repetition to balance the element of luck. Poker is actually one of the most luck-free professions as there is so many tournaments and hands.
I would also add thinking in % probabilities. Whether for sports events or daily live occurrences, many people just go black and white thinking (0 or 100%), whereas poker players will put the possible outcomes on a range of varying probabilities and don’t get surprised or upset if sometimes the less likely outcome happens.
I'm playing 1-2 match the stack (100%) w/ a $5 max rake. This is an amazing structure but I am struggling with variance. I need some help coaching. If you can point me in the right direction for one on one coaching, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
What is a professional poker player thinking when he plays roulette knowing that’s an -EV play? They spend their lives trying to exploit any +EV play even when it’s marginal but still play roulette
Why do you even think???
