One of the primary reasons you want to make a deal at a poker tournament is to reduce variance.
A huge amount of money is tied up in the top places (usually first) of a poker tournament and it’s hard to consistently place high, if you understand how to make a decent deal at a poker tournament it’s probably a good idea.
Using online tools (ICM or Independent Chip Model calculators) it’s actually pretty easy to get a ‘fair’ deal based on the mathematical value of each chip and how many chips each poker player has.
If you’re a more skilled poker player (or a highly skilled poker pro) it’s common to either only take deals vs other pros or to argue that you deserve a higher share of the prize pool then ICM would suggest your poker chips are worth.
Finding good reasons to make deals (primarily reduction of normal poker tournament variance or tough competition) and good ways to modify deals to extract edges are signs of a poker pro.
If you’re building huge chip stacks already but still looking for how to improve at pot limit omaha, no limit hold ‘em, or poker in general, Phil Galfond is here to teach you how to think like a professional poker player.
