When I looked at it in 1996, when I first heard about the dangers of genetic engineering from a genetic engineer blowing the whistle. I thought, what’s the strategy here? Monsanto has billions of dollars, we have $1.95. They run the government, they run the media, they’re controlling the farmers. They give money to academia. They have them locked down. We can reach out to consumers. Now if consumers learn about the health dangers, they will choose not to eat the GMOs. That will put economic pressure on the food companies to remove them.
What was working to our advantage was that there were no consumer benefits from GMOs. No one sought. “I’d like my Cheerios with GMOs, please. Could you add Roundup to that?” No one wanted it, it was to kill weeds. And so we have been educating people. Now when you think about it, the strategy here is: Do we need to get 51% of Americans to be avoiding GMOs in order to win the battle in the marketplace? Will Kraft Foods wait till they’ve lost half their market share to make a change? No. I see your hands, like no, it’s definitely it’s not case.
Do you remember when Classic Coke changed its recipe? It had dropped like 2 percentage points in market share. All we needed was a small percentage. The mathematics was on our side. So who do we go to? Moms, health-conscious shoppers, people who are sick, religious people who think GMO means “God Move Over”. So we decided to go to the most receptive audiences, the most receptive places in the United States to get the numbers that we needed.
And we got the numbers. Forty-six percent of Americans now say they’re seeking non-GMO and that is way more than we need! It’s happening!
