This is the REAL REEL a new vlog series I will be doing on my LADY LUCK HQ Channel. The REAL REEL vlog series is going to take you through “honest answers” about CASINOS, GAMBLING and SLOTS.

Todays topic is: HOW DO I WIN MONEY or MAKE MONEY PLAYING SLOTS?

Many of you have seen my massive handpay videos on youtube and I get asked all the time…. Lady Luck, “Can you give me tips on how I can win” or “How can I win like that”.

I hope that this Las Vegas Vlog video I will shed some light on how slot machines work and how they are programed.

Slot machines are typically programmed to pay out 82% to 98% of the money that is bet by players. This is known as the RTP, “return to player”. The minimum RTP varies among jurisdictions/states and is established by gaming laws. Some example minimum payouts are: Nevada is 75%, in New Jersey, 83%, and in Mississippi 80%. All slot machines are programed to pay a portion to the “house”, (yes- this is why casinos are so beautiful) while returning the rest to the players during play. Just FYI the RTP percentages are NOT shared with the public so if you are playing slots in Nevada you will NOT KNOW if you are on a machines that has an RTP of 75% or 98% or anywhere in between.

Here is a simple math problem that helps illustrate how RTP works.

Let just say we are playing on a slot that has a 95% RTP.

This machine cost $1 per spin. We spin 1,000,000 times spending $1,000,000. The machine will return an average of $950,000 to its players, who have inserted $1,000,000 during that time. The house would keep the remaining $50,000.

A slot machine’s RTP payout percentage is set at the factory when the software is written. Changing the payout percentage after a slot machine has been placed on the gaming floor requires a physical swap of the software (changing this out varies among jurisdictions). Historically, many casinos, both online and offline, have been unwilling to publish individual game RTP figures, making it impossible for the player to know whether they are playing a “loose” or a “tight” game.

Moral of the story- Don’t gamble with what you can’t afford to loose!

  4. Thank you for an honest show about the chances of winning money at slots, Lady Luck. It’s exactly that, a chance and not a skill. there are things you can do to move that chance a bit more into your favor but, ultimately, nearly everyone who plays a slot machine will put in more money than they get back. Check to see if the payoff percentages are listed publicly by the state gambling board and play games based on that. Generally, the percentage is higher as the denomination used goes higher, Penny slots are tighter than 2 cent slots, are tighter than nickel, dime, quarter and so on. but the odds will not change if you’re paying higher amounts in that particular machine; it’s going to say ‘thank you’ the same amount if you pay $1 or $10 in a penny slot. the minimum payout percentage is set by the state’s gambling board but a casino can choose to make a machine looser. When I first went to Las Vegas in 1991, I’d see signs at banks of machines that would say “up to 98% loose” and one that even said up to 99.5%! What isn’t said is that there may only be one machine out of those 6 or 8 set to be that loose. So they aren’t lying, just not being completely truthful. Also, I think everyone who’s been to a casino has told or heard a story about how a person was playing a didn’t win, getup and leave and the very next person who sat down at it won a jackpot on their first spin! That’s why it’s called luck. In the present age of random number generators, if a spin wins or loses is determined when the button is pushed. For the first player to have one that jackpot, he would need to have waited and pressed the spin button at the exact same time that the winner had; not a millisecond sooner or later. That’s enough rambling, though. The absolute best advice is simply this. 1) never play more than you can afford to lose. 2) if you know a local, find out where they play and what machine. You probably still won’t win, but casinos that cater to the local population often have a higher payout rate in order to keep those locals happy. 😚(your average strip casino wants you to have fun, and spend money, but will not put quite the same effort to keep you coming back that a local-oriented casino does) 3) if a particular game feels ‘lucky’ or ‘unlucky’ to you, trust your gut. You aren’t really going to change the chances of you winning anything’s, but your perceptions will mean you will be more likely enjoy plying the machine you feel luckier on than one you don’t even though you don’t win. 4)higher denomination machines will usually be looser than lower denominations. Play accordingly but always keep point #1 firmly in mind; you’ll burn through a hundred dollars faster on a dollar machine than you do on a penny machine.
